Black to the Future – Bonn & Cologne 24. & 29. May 2017

The first study-visit for at least 15 youth workers and managers will take place in Bonn/Cologne, Germany between Wednesday 24th and Monday 29th May 2017

Black to the Future is an Erasmus+ project ( which focuses on intergenerational youth work practice within the African Diaspora community in Amsterdam, Bonn/Cologne and London. The project will facilitate an African Sankofa process which encourages the transfer of youth work knowledge, skills and values through looking back, identifying best practice and then creating building blocks on which to inform future youth work practice. The project runs from February 2017 to May 2018 and comprises a series of local activities plus transnational intergenerational training and study-visits. The project will offer opportunities to share contemporary youth work practices with African Diaspora youth across the three major cities indicated above.


Enable youth workers to develop and share effective methods in reaching out to marginalised young people, refugees, asylum seekers and migrants

Through professionalising youth workers, develop their competences to help them set quality standards

Develop two-way transfer of knowledge, skills and experience between older and younger generations of youth workers

Create opportunities for further collaboration pan Europe organisations to expand their professional network, pursue learning links with European learning providers, and explore the potential to collaborate on joint projects.


1. 3 transnational intergenerational study-visits and training for 30 youth workers and managers aged 21 ? 65 years providing an opportunity to share past and present youth work practices

2. At least 8 local sessions which prepare participants for the visits and reflects on transnational learning

3. Exploration of the history of African Diaspora migration to Amsterdam, Bonn /Cologne and London

4. Recording and mapping (using audio digital media and online mapping tools) of the history and stories of youth work, youth workers and iconic youth clubs and projects which were used and/or are currently used to support work with African Diaspora young people

5. An evaluation process which captures some of the key learning from the project.


Practicing/employed or volunteer youth workers and /or managers who are currently working directly with young people in their communities aged 21+ Former Youth Workers and /or managers over 50 years of age (potentially retired) Open-minded current and former practitioners and /or managers willing to learn from intergenerational practices Participants willing to attend at least 8 local sessions and a minimum of 1 transnational mobility Participants willing to contribute to the planning and hosting of a transnational mobility in their own city A L100 contribution towards administrative costs and food (a small number of bursaries are available) Participants willing to engage with the expectations of the monitoring and evaluation process deployed throughout the life of the project.


1. Increased knowledge of early youth work and how this practice can be used to shape current/future practice

2. Co-creating new models of youth work with African Diaspora young people which can be used in future practice

3. A transnational perspective enabling participants to better understand how youth work can be used to provide better support mechanisms to newly arrived young people (including migrants, asylum seeks and refugees) from Africa

4. Increased capacity and skills which could lead to new employment opportunities.

Stichting Interlock ( is a relatively new Dutch NGO in South East Amstedam. They organise activities for young peple which focus on developing their socialand communicative skills, neighborhood participation, entrepreneurship, empowerment of young females, and youth worker European mobility. Specific programmes and activities respond to the expressed needs of the young people.
